Plumbing

Why it matters for your home
Good plumbing ensures access to running water without leaks or bad smells, which is essential for your comfort and health. Leaks can damage the building structure and encourage mold growth.
The African context
Often, materials are of inconsistent quality, welds are poorly done, or drainage slopes are inadequate. In some areas, water pressure is low, sometimes requiring booster pumps.
Red flags
- ⚠ Visible pipes that are poorly secured or run haphazardly
- ⚠ Persistent foul odors even after using toilets or sinks
- ⚠ Low water flow or visible leaks right after installation
- ⚠ The contractor suggests very thin PVC pipes for pressurized water
Questions to ask
- 1. "What types of pipes will you use (PVC, PPR, multi-layer) and what is their thickness?"
- 2. "How do you plan to manage rainwater and wastewater drainage (septic tank, connection to public sewer)?"
- 3. "Can you show me photos of past plumbing work with the pipes installed before they were covered?"
