Sheet under review by our engineersIt's a layer of mortar (a mixture of cement, sand, and water) applied to walls, both inside and outside, to make them smooth and uniform. It's the first step before painting or tiling.
Why it matters for your home
Plastering (render/stucco) protects walls, provides good thermal and sound insulation, and prepares an aesthetic surface for finishes. Poor plastering can crack, crumble, and ruin the final appearance of the house.
The African context
The quality of sand and cement varies, and the mixing ratio is often not respected, leading to cracks or poor adhesion. Drying time is sometimes cut short, which harms the plaster's strength.
Red flags
- ⚠ Plaster that crumbles or turns to dust when touched
- ⚠ Visible cracks shortly after application or the appearance of damp patches
- ⚠ Uneven surface, with bumps and hollows visible when looking at the wall from the side
- ⚠ The contractor does not allow sufficient drying time between coats or before painting
Questions to ask
- 1. "What mixing ratio (amount of cement to sand) will you use for the plaster?"
- 2. "What is the planned drying time between the different plaster coats and before painting?"
- 3. "How do you ensure the flatness of the walls before and during plaster application?"
