Screed
Sheet under review by our engineersIt's a layer of mortar laid on the concrete slab, before installing the floor covering (tiles, parquet, etc.). Its purpose is to perfectly level the floor and conceal electrical conduits and pipes.
Why it matters for your home
A well-laid screed ensures a flat and solid floor for tiling or other coverings, preventing tiles from breaking, sounding hollow, or uneven floors. It is essential for comfort and aesthetics.
The African context
Often, the cement ratio is insufficient, or the screed is not adequately leveled and smoothed, resulting in an uneven floor. Lack of reinforcement (welded mesh) is also common, causing cracks.
Red flags
- ⚠ The floor appears uneven, with bumps or hollows when viewed closely
- ⚠ The screed is laid directly on the ground without an insulation film or moisture protection
- ⚠ The contractor doesn't allow sufficient drying time before tiling
- ⚠ Screed that sounds hollow (when tapped) or crumbles easily
Questions to ask
- 1. "What mixing ratio (cement/sand) will you use for the screed?"
- 2. "How do you ensure the flatness of the screed, and what is the drying time before laying tiles?"
- 3. "Do you plan to include reinforcing mesh (metal grid) in the screed to prevent cracks?"
