The African context
Often undersized for the number of residents, poorly ventilated, or badly installed (sealing problems, absent or ineffective leach field). Pumping (emptying) is sometimes neglected, leading to blockages.
Red flags
- ⚠ The contractor doesn't dig a large enough hole for the tank or proposes it too close to the house
- ⚠ No high or low ventilation planned for the tank to evacuate gases
- ⚠ Persistent foul odors around the tank shortly after installation
- ⚠ No leach field or soakaway pit mentioned for the disposal of treated water

- 1. "What is the volume of the septic tank you will install, and is it suitable for my family's size?"
- 2. "How do you ensure proper ventilation and sealing of the tank to prevent leaks and odors?"
- 3. "How will treated water be disposed of (leach field, soakaway pit), and where will it be located?"
