Sheet under review by our engineersThis is the part of your roof that extends beyond the walls of the house. Imagine the brim of a hat extending beyond your head: it protects your face. The roof overhang does the same for the walls and openings of your house.
Why it matters for your home
Extremely important in our climates! A good roof overhang protects your walls from pouring rain, preventing humidity and dirt. It also provides shade on the facades, helping to keep the house cooler, and protects your windows and doors from direct sun and bad weather.
The African context
A generous overhang is a major asset for thermal comfort and the durability of the house against intense sun and torrential rains. If they're too short, walls are exposed; if poorly finished underneath, they can become nests for insects or birds.
Red flags
- ⚠ The overhang is very short (less than 40-50 cm), leaving the walls very exposed.
- ⚠ The underside of the overhang (the soffit) is left unfinished, without a covering (board, PVC, or plaster).
- ⚠ The overhang is not securely anchored to the roof structure, indicating a risk of being torn off by the wind.
- ⚠ Traces of humidity are already appearing on the walls just below the overhang.
Questions to ask
- 1. "What will be the width of the roof overhang?"
- 2. "How will the underside of the overhang (the soffit) be finished?"
- 3. "How will the overhang be protected against insects (if made of wood)?"
Cost hint (indicative)
The cost is integrated into the roof's structure and finish; a wider overhang or a more elaborate finish slightly increases the overall roof budget.
