Why it matters for your home
Essential! It protects your house's walls and foundations from erosion and humidity. Without a gutter, water falls directly at the base of the house, which can create puddles, damage foundations, and even encourage mold growth or water infiltration into the walls.
The African context
With heavy tropical rains, a well-sized and securely installed gutter is vital. Often made of galvanized steel, zinc, or PVC, it must be wide enough and have a good slope to prevent clogging. Leaves and debris can often block it, highlighting the importance of its maintenance.
Red flags
- ⚠ The gutter is too small for the roof area or has no visible slope.
- ⚠ There are visible joints that are not well soldered or glued, signs of future leaks.
- ⚠ The gutter material seems thin and fragile, or it's not securely fastened to the roof edges.
- ⚠ Rainwater is not directed away from the house but accumulates right at the base of the walls.
