Beam

Sheet under review by our engineers

A beam is a horizontal reinforced concrete element that rests on columns or walls and supports the weight of slabs and upper floor walls. It's like the strong "branches" connecting the "trunks" (columns) and supporting the "floor" (slab).

Why it matters for your home

Beams transfer loads from slabs and walls to columns and foundations. If a beam is poorly designed (not enough rebar, incorrect concrete mix) or poorly executed, it can crack, sag, and endanger the integrity of the floor and the entire house.

The African context

As with columns, unscrupulous contractors may reduce the diameter or number of rebars, or position them incorrectly. The connection between beams and columns is crucial and often poorly done, leading to cracks or structural weaknesses.

Red flags

  • ⚠ The beam rebars are not properly anchored into the columns.
  • ⚠ The beam is visibly thin or already bending even before being loaded.
  • ⚠ The beam concrete shows air bubbles or crumbly areas after formwork removal.
  • ⚠ Poor quality formwork wood is used, deforming the beam.

Questions to ask

  • 1. "What reinforcement is planned for the beams (number and diameter of rebars)?"
  • 2. "How will the connection between beams and columns be ensured?"
  • 3. "How will you support the beams during concrete setting?"

Cost hint (indicative)

The cost is included in the overall structural shell and is difficult to isolate.
