Ring beam / Tie beam
Sheet under review by our engineersA ring beam (or tie beam) refers to reinforced concrete belts (with steel bars) that go around the walls of your house, either at the bottom, on each floor, or at the top under the roof. Imagine them as strong "collars" holding the entire structure together.
Why it matters for your home
Reinforcement ties (or tie beams) are crucial for your house's solidity, especially during earthquakes or strong winds. They prevent walls from spreading apart or collapsing. If done poorly or missing, your house risks severe cracking, or even collapsing.
The African context
In our regions, reinforcement ties are often neglected or undersized to save costs, but this is a serious mistake. With heat and humidity, materials can behave differently, and good reinforcement is essential for durability. We also see rusty rebar used, which weakens everything.
Red flags
- ⚠ Your mason doesn't mention reinforcement ties or hasn't planned for them.
- ⚠ They use rebar that is too small or rusty.
- ⚠ The concrete is poorly vibrated, leaving holes ('honeycombs').
- ⚠ The reinforcement is placed directly on the dirt without a clean base.
Questions to ask
- 1. "What diameter and how many rebars will you use for the reinforcement ties?"
- 2. "How will you ensure the concrete is properly compacted within the reinforcement?"
- 3. "Have you planned for reinforcement ties at each level and in the roof?"
