A column is a vertical reinforced concrete pillar that supports the beams and slabs of your house. Imagine it as the "trunk" of a tree supporting the branches (beams) and leaves (slabs) of the upper floors.

Why it matters for your home

Columns are the main vertical load-bearing elements of your house. If they are too thin, poorly reinforced, or badly poured, they can bend, crack, and lead to structural collapse. They are essential for the stability of the entire construction.

The African context

This is a common area for fraud: reduced rebar diameter, insufficient number of rebars, or stirrups (small rebars enclosing the main ones) poorly spaced. Masons often don't respect concrete mix ratios, making it less resistant.

Red flags

  • The column rebars are not securely connected to the foundations or upper floors.
  • The rebars are rusty or of different diameters than planned.
  • The concrete poured into the columns is very liquid or, conversely, dry and lumpy.
  • Stirrups are widely spaced or not properly tied.

Questions to ask

  • 1. "What is the diameter of the main rebars and the spacing of the stirrups for the columns?"
  • 2. "How do you ensure a good connection between the columns and the foundations/beams?"
  • 3. "How will you vibrate the concrete in the columns to avoid voids?"
