Reinforcement / Rebar

Sheet under review by our engineers

Reinforcement, or rebar, refers to all the steel bars placed inside concrete. Concrete is very strong in compression (when squeezed) but weak in tension (when stretched). The rebars are there to make it strong in tension.

Why it matters for your home

This is the metal skeleton that gives strength to reinforced concrete. Without proper rebar (correct diameters, quantities, and positioning), the concrete will crack and break under loads. Your house would lose its solidity and could collapse in case of a problem.

The African context

Very often, to save money, masons use rebar of smaller diameters, in lesser quantities, or place them incorrectly. It's also common to see rusted rebar being used, which significantly weakens it.

Red flags

  • ⚠ The rebar is rusted (especially if it's flaking).
  • ⚠ The rebar diameters are visibly smaller than planned.
  • ⚠ The rebar is placed directly on the ground or formwork without spacers.
  • ⚠ Connections between rebar are not made with sufficient overlap or are poorly tied.

Questions to ask

  • 1. "What is the rebar plan approved by the engineer?"
  • 2. "How do you ensure the rebar is correctly positioned and covered with concrete?"
  • 3. "How do you protect the rebar from rust before pouring?"

Cost hint (indicative)

Rebar represents a significant portion of the structural work cost, often 15-25% of the total structure budget.
