Blinding concrete / Lean concrete
Sheet under review by our engineersIt's a thin layer of concrete, not very strong, poured at the bottom of the excavations, just before placing the rebar (steel bars) of the actual foundations. It's like a clean, flat 'bed'.
Why it matters for your home
It provides a clean, level, and stable surface to properly position the foundation rebar (steel bars). Without it, the rebar could rest directly on the earth, rust prematurely, or not be properly covered by the structural concrete, weakening the structure.
The African context
Often overlooked or replaced by a simple plastic sheet, which is a serious mistake. It protects the rebar from the earth and ensures proper concrete cover, crucial in our humid climates.
Red flags
- ⚠ The contractor doesn't mention 'lean concrete' or doesn't plan to pour it.
- ⚠ The foundation rebar is placed directly on the earth.
- ⚠ You're offered to 'skip' this step to save time or money.
Questions to ask
- 1. "What is the planned thickness for the lean concrete?"
- 2. "Is the lean concrete included in the plan?"
- 3. "How will you ensure the rebar doesn't touch the earth?"
Cost hint (indicative)
Low cost compared to complete foundations. Around 500 to 1,500 FCFA per m² poured at 5 cm thickness.
