Steel column

Steel column

Vertical member carrying roof and floor loads down to the foundations. Works in compression, with one major risk: buckling (slenderness must be controlled).

Typical dimensions & rules
  • Common profiles: HEA/HEB 140-300 (buildings), square tubes for light posts
  • Typical height: 3-8 m
  • Checks: compression + buckling (curves a-d), column base
  • Protection: anti-rust paint or galvanizing, fire protection if public building
Common mistakes to avoid
  • Overly slender column without intermediate restraint → buckling
  • Column base without grout bedding
  • No corrosion protection in humid coastal areas
