Why it matters for your home
A good facade coating is crucial for the longevity of your home. It protects it from humidity, water infiltration, and UV rays. If poorly done, cracks can appear, water can seep into the walls, causing internal dampness issues, structural degradation, and a deteriorated appearance.
The African context
Under the tropical sun, facades are directly exposed to intense heat and torrential rains. It's vital to choose resistant materials and ensure good waterproofing. Common errors include exterior paints not suited for the climate, plasters that crack due to building movement or incorrect mixing, and water drainage problems on balconies or window sills.
Red flags
- ⚠ Plasters that crumble or show cracks very quickly after application.
- ⚠ Paints that fade or peel after a few months.
- ⚠ Absence of 'drip edges' (small grooves that prevent water from running down the wall) under window sills or balconies.
- ⚠ Damp or mold spots already appearing on the facade.
