Why it matters for your home
Good paint beautifies your home, protects your walls from humidity and dust, and makes maintenance easier. Poorly applied or low-quality paint can peel, mold, or get dirty very quickly, giving a neglected look and requiring costly touch-ups.
The African context
The tropical climate demands paints that are resistant to humidity, heat, and mold. Often, walls are not properly prepared (sanding, primer) before painting, which reduces its durability. Cheap paints diluted excessively are very common but don't last long.
Red flags
- ⚠ Paint is applied on dusty, damp, or poorly plastered walls.
- ⚠ Very visible roller or brush marks, drips.
- ⚠ The contractor suggests using only one coat of paint or painting without a primer.
- ⚠ The paint smells very strongly of thinner (a sign it has been watered down or is of very poor quality).
Questions to ask
- 1. "What are the steps for wall preparation before painting (sanding, plastering/filler, primer)?"
- 2. "How many coats of paint do you plan to apply?"
- 3. "What brand and type of paint are you using (washable, anti-humidity)?"
